You already know the price difference between a brand new hot tub spa, and a used hot tub that is for sale by the owner-whether it’s your neighbor, relative, at a garage sale, online, CraigsList, or a hot tub spa dealer. How do you determine if the lower price is worth the risk of a? Here are 5 things to consider in the “New vs. Used” hot tub comparison:

1. What is the reputation of the seller? Ideally, you would find a used hot tub at a dealer. Why? This is the ideal place because a dealer will typically refurbish the hot tub:

• They will inspect it and go through a check list;
• Sanitize the hot tub;
• Any part that is questionable will be replaced;
• Offer a warranty with the refurbished hot tub;
• Be available for follow up concerns or issues.

There are many hot tubs on Craigslist right now, but what people don’t realize is that most are bad quality spas (life spa, life spring, advance spas, lazy-boy spas, Coleman, Warm Springs, etc.). You will buy the spa for $500.00 and think you got a great deal. Then comes the expenses:

• $250 to get the spa delivered;
• You need a new cover ($350 for a cheap one);
• Pump seal is leaking ($150);
• All the pillows need to be replaced (at least $125);
• Usually one or more of the jets are shot ($250 plus).

You now have over $1, 900 in that spa that was a great deal for $500.00- and that is if everything else works-which is normally not the case. Remember: there is a reason people are giving them away, which leads to the second consideration;

2. Why are they selling the used hot tub?

• Are they moving?
• Are the payments too much to handle?
• Are they upgrading to a new one?
• Has the hot tub been a headache?

If you find a used hot tub at a dealer, it usually is because the previous owner was unable to make the payments, and it was repossessed. This is usually the best case scenario to buy a pre-owned hot tub.

3. What brand is the used hot tub? Brand name hot tubs are a better deal, because:

• Replacement parts are easier to find and buy;
• Repair and service is easier to find;
• There are qualified people in your area to answer your technical questions.

You may not be as fortunate with the above circumstances if you bought a “no-name” used hot tub.
